You might think the name ‘wastewater’ tells
you all you need to know about it. But wastewater is simply water that has come
into contact with humans in some way. Whether it’s been used in the home, or
industrially, wastewater is a hotly debated topic when it comes to marine
environment.
Is it harmful?
Wastewater doesn’t have to be harmful or
dangerous. Wastewater also doesn’t have to negatively affect sea life or
humans. Wastewater could even be cleaner than actual ocean water as it has
often been treated with chemicals in order to make it fit for human usage.
However, wastewater can be harmful to the
environment if it some packed with poisonous chemicals or bacteria that can
pose a significant threat to the health of a living creature.
Is wastewater the same as ‘sewage’?
The terms wastewater is often used to
describe sewage but, in fact, the two terms stand for different things. While
sewage is considered wastewater, wastewater is not considered sewage.
Do we have to worry about wastewater in our
oceans?
We have to worry about certain subsets of
wastewater being willfully abandoned in the ocean, but we do not necessarily
have to worry about wastewater being disposed of as a whole.
What are we doing about wastewater in terms
of the environment?
You may not think much about the water you
just did the washing up with after it’s drained down the sink, but just because
it went down the drain, it doesn’t mean it’s no longer there.
Wastewater companies do their best to make
sure that wastewater is returned to the environment safely. Wastewater goes
through an intense process in which companies make sure that it will not have a
harmful impact on the environment if it is released.
