Ever smelt something funny near your kitchen sink, only to lean forward and realise that your drain smells like rotten eggs? Somehow, bleach never seems to cut it. Sure, it cleans the sink, but then it just smells like bleach.

Well, there are other ways to make sure your sink smells not only clean but fresh as well! Many of them are much easier than you think, too, and don’t involve toxic chemicals.

1. Boiling water

Boiling pasta? Making a cup of tea? Sometimes the simple act of pouring boiling water down the sink can wash away all those nasty smells. It’s clean, it’s sterile and you can get it out of your own tap! This works best for milder smells, but it usually does the trick.

Just remember to pour it all directly into the drains once you’re finished boiling and let the water do the rest. Also, try not to get any of it down you and try not to do this in the presence of small children.

2. Baking Powder & Vinegar

Adding vinegar to your hot water solution (along with a dash of washing detergent) is the next step up from the boiling water stage. The acidic properties of vinegar will help wash away more stubborn blockages or any unpleasant odours lining your drain, while the detergent

This method works for many homeowners across the country and some have even claimed that their need for a plumber disappeared once they tried it out.

3. Lemon juice

If all that fails, the next thing to add would be lemon juice. Not only does lemon juice produce that natural clean smell, the citrus will help dissolve any other grime clinging to the inside of your drain pipe.
