Top 5 Septic Tank Questions Answered

Septic tank maintenance is extremely important. Improperly maintaining a septic tank can be an expensive issue, cause damage to the environment and our health. Whether you’ve recently purchased a home with a septic tank or are thinking of doing so, you’re likely to have a number of questions about it.

We’ve answered the top five septic tank questions to help you.

What is a septic tank?

A septic tank is a large container buried near a home. It receives all of the home’s waste water, where the solids will settle to the bottom and grease and lighter solids will float to the top. Healthy bacteria in the tank breaks down these materials to allow effluent water to leave the tank through a Drainage field.

Do I need to empty my septic tank?

Yes, your septic tank will need emptying from time to time. The sludge at the bottom of the tank will quickly build up and will need to be removed. A contractor will be able to remove the sludge for you and put effluent water back in. Your septic tank should be emptied according to the manufacturer’s recommendations or at least yearly.

Should there be scum on top of my septic tank?

If the scum on top of your septic tank is liquid, it’s fine. This consists of fat, oil and grease from cooking. Over time, the enzymes within the tank will break this down. If the scum is thick, it could dry out and turn solid, stopping air from getting to the effluent water. When this happens, you should get your tank emptied as soon as possible.

What should I avoid flushing?

There are a number of things you shouldn’t flush down your toilet to help keep your septic tank in good condition. This includes bleach, paint, solvent, kitchen fat, cigarette ends, sanitary products, hair and wet wipes to name a few! Septic tanks treat biological waste and cannot dispose of big, physical blockages.

How can I find someone to empty my septic tank?

Businesses who offer waste disposal services will be able to empty your septic tank. If you’re new to the area, ask your neighbours who empties theirs; if you have a septic tank, it’s likely your neighbours will too. For those in Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Rutland, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and parts of Northamptonshire, Bates Environmental can empty your septic tanks and advise on your optimum emptying schedule.
