What is Causing my Drains to Block?

Experiencing a blockage within our home’s drains is a common problem faced by many homeowners. Unfortunately, they can be expensive and time-consuming to eradicate if they are not tackled correctly.

There are a number of things that can cause drains to block and knowing what they are can help you to put preventative measures in place.

Grease/Fat

Whilst grease and fat may be one of the most common cause of drain blockages, it is also one of the easiest things to prevent. Fatty substances are sticky, so they attach to the insides of our pipes, gradually building up, creating a blockage and making it difficult for anything else to pass through. Keep an eye on what your disposing of down the sink to avoid a blockage from occurring; dispose of grease and fat in a separate container, and pop it in the bin.

Hair

One or two strands won’t create a blockage, but a build-up of hair down your bath or showers plughole will quickly become a large obstruction, stopping water passing through with ease. There are items available on the market that can catch hair from making its way down our plugs, as well as things that can help you pull out any hair that has made its way further down. You should check regularly for hair build-up.

Toiletries

Items like nappies, toilet paper, tampons and other toiletries are commonly known to block drains. Whilst toilet paper is designed to be flushed away, it’s important not to do so in large amounts. Nappies, baby wipes, tampons and similar are not designed to be flushed down the toilet and can quickly cause large blockages that will require professional help to eradicate, so should be disposed of in a bin instead.
